African-origin religious manifestations have been handed down from one generation to the next. The language of each and every country where these cults are worshipped has by and large been the main means of communication. Nonetheless, most rituals and objects used in ceremonies have retained their original names. The following glossary compiles the commonest terms and words related to the cults also practiced in these Caribbean lands. These locutions sometimes have other meanings, yet only the main ones are contained herein. Moreover, graphic representations could vary depending on the regions or cult centers in which those words are used.

A

Abbo
Lamb. Also known as Agután and Agutaná for sheep.
Abó faca
Also known as idde. Bracelet anointed to Orula handed in to the initiated person who received this Orisha.
Abure
Brother, sister.
Aché
Virtue granted to the saints to exert a certain power or possession. Also referred to the saint's attributes. The soul of something, a virtue. It's the grace anointed to a certain saint. Orula's Aché refers to the powders used in Ifá ceremonies. It can also be written as Aché.
Acheré
Painted gourd used in santeria ceremonies, anointed to the celebrated or invoked Orisha.
Achó
Garment, dress.
Acucó
Also written Akukó. Rooster.
Afoché
Magic powders used to cast a spell or evilness
Agbebe
Fan used by female deities.
Agogó
Metal bell used to invoke an Orisha. Ochun's bells, for instance, are yellow.
Aguanillí
Designation given to Oggun in Yoruba's rites and prayers.
Ajá
A bunch of palm or coconut fiber sticks used in ceremonies to sweep.
Aleyo
A non-initiated worshipper.
Amalá
A Yoruba ritual food made of cornmeal and lamb. This is one of the offers made to Shangó and it features in several patakies.
Amombo
Priest of Shango's cult in Trinidad.
Añá
Drum. Also the Orisha living inside batá drums.
Asoto
The most sacred drum in voodoo.
